IT'S UP TO YOU
You're minding your own business, going about your work for the day. Perhaps you're at a desk, or doing laundry, or running errands. This is a day like every other, neither interesting nor cataclysmic. It's just life.
In walks a stranger. Come follow me, he says. It's an offer, or an invitation, but an imperative one. Then he moves on, without so much as a glance behind to see what you'll do. In a little while, the stranger will be out of sight. What will your response be?
In his wake, the stranger leaves a lot of questions. Where is he going? What does it mean "to follow"? For how long does this situation last? What's the price—and what's the pay line? For this offer to seem reasonable, there ought to be a longer conversation, don't you think? More details. Perhaps a contract. At the very least, the stranger might have introduced himself. Provided credentials. Presented endorsements.
The stranger is now at a far distance. Pretty soon he'll be over the horizon and out of view. But you still have lots of matters to sort out. What about your family, your present employment, and for heaven's sake, your stuff? You can't just drop everything in life and GO... especially when you don't know what's out there or what comes next.
It sounds unreasonable. It's absurd, rude, mysterious, out of the question. You're surely not taking this seriously. People don't do this. Well, some people do. Saints.
